RESUMEN

The present study evaluated the effect of the Fenton process as pretreatment for metronidazole (MNZ) removal coupled with a phytoremediation system using Scirpus lacustris as macrophyte. Initial concentrations of 0.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg MNZ/L were studied in batch cultures. Results obtained in the MNZ removal by phytoremediation showed efficiencies of 93 ± 2%, 81 ± 4%, 85 ± 1%, 84 ± 2%, and 87 ± 6%, respectively. The metronidazole pretreated by the Fenton process and subsequently fed to the phytoremediation system increased the removal efficiencies up to 93 ± 3%, 99 ± 1%, 99 ± 4%, 94 ± 2%, and 94 ± 3%, respectively. Individual studies with Scirpus lacustris in touch with metronidazole displayed relative growth rates of 0.02-0.04 d-1, showing the not toxic effect of the antibiotic on the macrophyte growth. On the other hand, the BMG kinetic model best describes the removal of MNZ by phytoremediation. Finally, applying the Fenton process as a pretreatment makes the MNZ more assimilable for the phytoremediation system, converting the integration of Fenton with the phytoremediation like other attractive technology to be considered in removing emerging compounds.

RESUMEN

In this research, the adsorption of three synthetic dyes dissolved in an aqueous solution on chitosan cryogel beads (Q-C-EGDE) was compared. The effect of the pH of the solution on the adsorption capacity of each dyes was analyzed. Furthermore, the kinetics and adsorption isotherms were compared, at temperatures of 283.15 K, 303.15 K and 323.15 K, and the kinetic and adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to three mathematical models, respectively. The biosorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the nitrogen physisorption BET method and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The characterization results show that the cryogel is composed of low-surface, macroporous, porous grooved walls. The functional groups that took part in the adsorption were mainly amino groups (NH3+). When comparing the adsorption capacities, it was found that the dyes adsorb in the following order Blue 1 > Red 2 > Yellow 5 reaching capacities from 1600 mg/L to 850 mg/L. The results of the adsorption and mathematical modelling suggest that the process is regulated mainly by physisorption and is largely limited by mass transfer mechanisms within the cryogel, where the electrostatic charges present affect adsorption. The latter was corroborated by the Monte Carlo simulation.

RESUMEN

The azo dyes, Yellow 5 (Y5), Red 2 (R2) and Blue 1 (B1), quantified in solutions and in mixtures of binary dyes, were studied by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy. In this work was used a CIE algorithm developed in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The CIE algorithm is based on the tristimulus chromaticity diagram, as an alternative to the shielding effect that arises in dye mixtures, and it can also be applied to complex quantification methods such as HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). The results obtained through of the algorithm, showed a higher accuracy from 97 to 99% in relation with similar UV-Vis quantification methods. In contrast, linear methods only managed to reach an accuracy from 78 to 98%. Additionally, the algorithm yielded significant similar values to the UHPLC reference method. The results showed that the method CIE algorithm was accessible and reliable to quantify binary mixtures of the dyes used which suggests the possibility to apply this method on other dyes, within the limits of quantification obtained in this study (0.076-24.56 mg/L) and the pH values from 2 to 10.

RESUMEN

The work aim is to identify the risk areas by exposure to Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in the Metropolitan Zone of Toluca Valley (MZTV) using the mosses Fabriona cilaris and Leskea angustata as a biomonitors, geostatistical interpolation and multi-criteria evaluation by analytical hierarchy process. The results from the estimation of the enrichment factors (EF) showed that Pb is the heavy metal with the highest values, followed by the Zn, Cu and Cr. The EF obtained for all heavy metals show that there is a moderate to high anthropogenic enrichment. The above indicates that in the MZTV there are emission sources that contribute (significantly) in the amount of Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn accumulated in the biomonitor. Combustion processes, vehicle emissions, biomass burning, brick kiln emissions, agricultural and livestock activities, manufacturing industry and re-deposition by the action of the wind, were identified as the main heavy metals sources in the MZTV. Risk maps showed the high and medium risk areas are located in sites with poor urban vegetation coverage and close to highways and industrial parks. Low risk areas are located in sites with high urban vegetation coverage. The method used for identifying risk areas is a rapid and low-cost evaluation tool can allow local government environmental agencies to define public policies on air pollution control.

RESUMEN

The metropolitan area of the Toluca Valley (MATV) extends over an area of 1208.55 km(2) and has 1,361,500 inhabitants making it the fifth highest populated area in the country and the second highest in the state. The MATV has several environmental problems, with regards to the air quality. Particles PM10 and PM2.5 are considered to be the main pollutant due to these particles frequently exceeding the limit laid down in the standards of the air quality in the country. For this reason, samples of the mosses Fabriona ciliaris and Leskea angustata were collected at different sites in MATV, Mexico in order to establish the atmospheric deposition of heavy metals by means of the analysis of the mosses tissues. Results show the average metal concentrations in the mosses in the order of: Zn > Pb > Cr > Cd. The concentration capacities of heavy metals were higher in Fabriona ciliaris than Leskea angustata. Enrichment factors for Cr, Zn, Pb and Cd were obtained using the soils from the same sampling area. Enrichment factors results show that Cr is conservative in both sampling seasons with a terrigenous origin; Zn is moderately enriched in both sampling seasons and mainly associated to pedological-soil or substrate contribution and anthropogenic activities and Cd is highly enriched in the rainy season and Pb is highly enriched in both sampling seasons, with a predominantly anthropogenic origin. This study provides information to be considered in the strategies for similar environmental problems in the world.

RESUMEN

The bio-reduction method is reported as a part of a complimentary self-sustained technology, where bioremediation and metal particle production are related. The use of the characterization methods in this self sustainable technique open the expectative to be used for several other elements and with other plants, which will be discussed. However, the particular case of Mn nanoparticles involves an important option to generate nanoparticles in the range of 1-4 nanometers with a well controlled size and with a structure based on an fcc-like geometry for the smallest clusters and with more complex arrays for cluster greater than four shells, which involves magnetic moments significantly related to their atomistic configuration. At the same time, the use of the characterization methods establishes the dependence of the nanoparticle's size on the pH conditions used during the synthesis; small clusters in the range of 1-2 nm were generated using pH=5, and it was shown that for the smallest aggregates, simple polyhedron shapes are stable.

RESUMEN

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive atomic X-ray spectrometry (EDAX) were used to study the response mechanism of a previously reported new Hg membrane ion-selective electrode (ISE) based on 1,3-diphenylthiourea. These techniques allowed the study of the membrane surface characteristics, such as the morphological homogeneity and chemical composition. A 'twice Nernstian' response at pH > or = 7 was explained by the detection of the Hg(OH)+ cation. A normal Nernstian response was found at acidic pH values. Using these techniques, both coordination compounds, [Ligand-Hg-OH] at pH 7 and [Ligand-Hg-Ligand] at pH 4.5, were confirmed on the electrode membrane surface activated with Hg(NO3)2 solution at both pH values. These methods provide results which are independent of the potential measurement data and in agreement with them. A successful response model has explained both independent and unbiased sets of results. These conclusions confirm the proposed response mechanisms for this new Hg membrane sensor.

RESUMEN

Metal concentrations have been measured in water and sediments of the Jose Antonio Alzate Reservoir, Mexico, using EDXRF and ICP techniques. Spatial and temporal distributions of total metal levels have been identified; no organised pattern was detected for any particular metal concentration. Temporal variations of metal concentrations show evidence of the water self-cleaning capacity of the reservoir, despite the high-level metal contamination determined.
